Finder scopes enable you to aim your telescope easily.
Optical magnifying finders are "mini-telescopes" giving precise, magnified views of faint objects which can be invisible to the naked eye. The best ones have illuminated reticules showing a red crosshair on the dark sky background. The "correct image" type are the easiest to aim.
Zero power finders like the Telrad, RDF or Rigel types, are typically used on small refractors or Dobsonian telescopes with "push by hand" mounts. They show a red bullseye against the sky background but do not magnify the image. They work great with the Sky Spot Telrad finder charts, are very quick to use at low magnification, and let you learn your way around the sky quickly.
